The Los Angeles Lakers did not win the NBA Draft Lottery on Tuesday night but that doesn’t mean they can sulk about it for very long. While the team would have liked to grab the No. 1 pick in the draft, they still have the No. 7 overall pick and can still use it as an attractive piece of their franchises future.

Another piece of that future is the guy who will be the team’s head coach which is something else still as up in the air as who the team will draft in late June. Lots of names have been mentioned as being possibly connected to the Lakers job but it appears we have our first real front runner for the gig. According to Adrian Wojnarowski from Yahoo! Sports, Mike Dunleavy had interviewed for the head coaching job with the Lakers and did so on Wednesday morning.

Dunleavy has been mentioned as a possible candidate for the Lakers gig and his interview was expected to happen. But the fact that he seems to be the first one in the door is both telling about his chances of becoming head coach and just how lame the Lakers job had become.

That’s not a knock on Dunleavy, as he’s a fine head coach but he’s far from a rock star hiring that the Lakers usually make. It’s not splashy, it’s not flashy and it’s really the most normal coaching hire the team could make should they bring on Dunleavy.

Then again, maybe a change of pace like that is what the Lakers need and Dunleavy may be the right kind go normal to bring the Lakers out of this funk.
