We’re getting closer to the trade deadline, so the rumors should start to heat up. A new one being thrown out there has the Arizona Diamondbacks shopping right handed pitcher Brandon McCarthy to a couple of American League East teams.

SB Nation’s Chris Cotillo lists Toronto as a possible landing spot for McCarthy, as well as a second AL East team that is not exactly in the thick of the race right now.

"Another team to watch on McCarthy is the Red Sox, who were finalists to sign him at the Winter Meetings two years ago. Before inking a two-year, $15.5M deal with the D-Backs, McCarthy had serious discussions with the Red Sox, who were willing to offer the same deal as he got from Arizona–without the second guaranteed year. He chose the D-Backs and the Sox signed Ryan Dempster, but the sides could finally unite if the Boston is looking for starters this summer."

McCarthy is not exactly tearing it up in the NL this year, as evidenced by his 1-7 record and seriously awful 5.20 ERA in 12 starts. But when you’re desperate for starting pitching, you will consider just about anyone.

The Blue Jays are trying to bolster their rotation as they go into the long summer, and the Red Sox…well, the Red Sox are just trying to find something that will work and hopefully crawl back into the race. The only thing that’s worked for them this year is playing the Rays.

McCarthy’s not going to exactly send a bolt of lightning through Red Sox nation during this underwhelming stretch by their team, but you never know, maybe the guy gets inspired by Boston and finally becomes more than just a mediocre starter.
