The NFL season is still a few months away from kicking off, but players are starting to report to their new teams and they’re apparently bringing brand new gear with them. This seems to be the case with new Pittsburgh Steelers running back LeGarrette Blount, who tweeted out a picture of his new and improved facemask.

It’s a pretty intimating facemask to say the least, and Blount is a pretty intimating runner so they make natural fits for one another. We’ve seen custom facemasks before, like the cage that Justin Tuck put on his face and the grill that Ray Lewis rolled with in his last season in the NFL.

This one though seems to be just as cool without being nearly as flashy.

With Tuck, Lewis and other custom facemasks, it seems that the less there is to grab onto the better, which would make perfect sense for a running back. But make the facemask smaller and lessen the chances of critical facemasking penalties that get committed at least once or twice a game.

Plus, being the ferocious downhill runner that Blount is, this facemask fits his style and it’s something that the Steelers are hoping defenders dread to see coming their way in the 2014 season.
