Whitfield has made his career by training high-profile draft picks like Johnny Manziel, Cam Newton and Andrew Luck. Now he’s an intern at the 49ers mini camp. I wonder if the 36-year-old had to apply like the thousands of college students. And is he getting the proper college credit? Or is he a paid intern?

More from NFL

He will be around for mandatory minicamp and all of training camp. According to CSN Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco, Coach Jim Harbaugh said he got to know George Whitfield during his time as coach at the University of San Diego. Whitfield resides in San Diego and often trains his quarterbacks on the beach. Harbaugh must have been impressed by Whitfield. He’s glad to have Whitfield around.

“I thought it’d be beneficial for us to have him here,” Harbaugh said, via CSN Bay Area.

Though, again, Whitfield is an intern, spending time with the 49ers as part of the Bill Walsh Minority Coaching Fellowship. So it’s not like Harbaugh hired him as a quarterback coach.

“There’s no carte blanche, but we agree on a lot of things,” Harbaugh continued. “Haven’t found anything we disagree on. So it’s not like we’ve turned our quarterbacks over to George, but he’s going to augment and assist and I think it’ll be beneficial for us, beneficial for him and should be a win-win. Always looking for that.”

Harbaugh taking Whitfield under his wing seems like a win-win situation for the 49ers and Whitfield. While the players try out for the team, an unspoken tryout may be taking place for Whitfield. Could Whitfield be the next 49ers coaching hire?
