NBA Rumors: Magic should trade Arron Afflalo to Hornets

The Orlando Magic have won just 43 combined games over the last season, but have set themselves up well for the future, which is about as much as anyone could possibly hope for after trading Dwight Howard away.

The Magic have a few, nice, young players like forwards Tobias Harris and Maurice Harkless, center Nikola Vucevic and the number two overall pick of the 2013 NBA Draft, guard Victor Oladipo. They should be able to add a couple of more pieces this offseason with the fourth-overall and 12th-overall picks.

To clear room for these young players to play, the Magic may need to get rid of their veteran guards, Jameer Nelson, who has a partially guaranteed contract next season, and Arron Afflalo, who they would have to trade.

A report has surfaced that the Charlotte Hornets, in dire need of scoring, could be interested in trading their ninth-overall pick to the Magic for Afflalo. Joel Brigham of Basketball Insiders believes the Magic should ship Afflalo to Charlotte if they can land the ninth-overall pick.

Yeah, I’d take that, mostly because I don’t think Afflalo is destined to be an Orlando lifer. If they end up with Exum or Smart to pair up Oladipo, they’re not going to want to take minutes away from those guys by keeping Afflalo around. Earning another lottery pick to maybe steal away a guy like Julius Randle or Aaron Gordon at #9 would definitely help with the rebuilding process.

Afflalo, who is reportedly open to being dealt to a playoff team, was excellent for the Magic this year and had the best season of his career. He averaged 18.2 points, 3.6 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game while shooting 45.9% from the field, 42.7% from beyond the arc and 81.5% from the free throw line.

Trade him to the Suns for Bledsoe or Dragic. This solves the point guard problem. Take Randle with the 4th pick; this gives Vuc a bull to help on the boards and inside scoring. At twelve take a back up point guard to groom for the future – some combination of Ennis, Napier, Lavine, Payton, or Anderson should be available at number 12. Personally, I’d take Kyle Anderson just for the match up problems he causes. I don’t have any problem with his supposed speed issues; Connie Hawkins wasn’t that fast either.

No, if Orlando doesn’t want him, you should know. Wait for Free agent if we are not going after big star. Draft Gary Harris, Zack or Ennis.

I don’t think the Hornets would give up the 9th pick for Afflalo straight up. Maybe if he were about to be 27 years old instead of 29.

I could see the 9th pick and Gerald Henderson for the 12th pick and Afflalo.

That way the Hornets get their guy and upgrade the 2 spot while staying in the lottery, the Magic move up 3 spots and are now in range for a possible Julius Randle/Aaron Gordon/Marcus Smart slide, clear up PT for Oladipo and likely Dante Exum while having a solid veteran wing in Gerald Henderson to help them with the transition.

The Magic wouldn’t go for this. Mostly because of the situation Charlotte is in. Charlotte is in playoffs mode. Meaning they need more of an impact player, Afflalo is that player. As a result, Charlotte has more to gain in this trade situation than the magic. Charlotte would still have a lottery pick and a go-to scorer while Orlando would move up only three spots, and get a halfway decent player coming off wrist surgery, on his shooting wrist. Biyombo or Zeller would be a better alternative to Henderson. But instead of the 12th pick, Charlotte would get Andrew Nicholson or Maurice Harkless. Both are good players with a ton of upside.

If they aren’t getting the 12th pick or a future 1st in the deal, I really can’t see Charlotte trading #9 to Orlando

Get 9th with this deal and trade 9 and 12 for 5th pick. 4 and 5 would be awesome.
