The Los Angeles Lakers desire an expedited return to the postseason but given their current roster, that seems to be somewhat of a pipe dream, even with a healthy Kobe Bryant. Given that, for weeks we’ve heard suggestions that the Lakers would attempt to trade their No. 7 draft pick with the hope they’d be able to acquire a solid veteran in return.

That may have been a good plan under normal circumstances but unfortunately for the Lakers, they’re sandwiched between two teams who are also attempting to move their draft picks and are looking for a veteran talent as well. The Boston Celtics (No. 6) and Sacramento Kings (No. 8) have been seeking to move out of their position much like the Lakers and given they are all looking for a similar return, the market appears to be a bit saturated leaving options for all three teams a bit gloomy.

Given that, it seems increasing likely that the Lakers, despite their best efforts, will be holding onto their pick according to Basketball Insiders Steve Kyler who, while responding to a fan question suggested the likelihood of the pick remaining with the Lakers.

"Q: In your opinion do the Los Angeles Lakers still have the 7th pick come Thursday?A: 75% yes. They are trying."

Understandably, the Los Angeles Lakers don’t really want to wait two or three seasons for a young talent to develop so even if they do keep the selection, you have to wonder how long the said player will remain on their roster, especially if they can trade for a veteran who can help them win now.
