The Boston Red Sox aren’t exactly seeing a repeat of their 2013 success this year, and that could spell bad news for a few veteran players as the team looks to pare payroll and re-load for the future.

More from Boston Red Sox

Jake Peavy is one of the veterans whose name is popping up in trade rumors as the deadline fast approaches. Does this bother Peavy, who is no stranger to trade rumors?

WEEI asked Peavy if he had gone to the team to talk about his situation and here’s what he said:

"No. I have a great relationship with my pitching coach (Juan Nieves), my manager (John Farrell) and my general manager (Ben Cherington). We’re all very open with each other. I don’t need any clarity on any situation involving anything. At the end of the day, you do what you’re told, work as hard as you can work, get better at your craft. That’s the way I approach each day and will continue to do that. If you start worrying about stuff like that, your focus is off where it needs to be and it’s going to affect things."

The fact is that, with Rubby de la Rosa emerging, Peavy is looking more and more expendable. Peavy hasn’t pitched altogether dreadfully, but that’s not really the point. He’s a high-priced veteran on a team that doesn’t seem to be going anywhere. There’s probably a contender out there who wouldn’t mind having his arm and presence for the stretch run.

So, the Red Sox would be silly not to at least explore a trade, and try to bring in a prospect or two who might help when they are ready to re-load next year or down the line.
