Multiple teams are said to have interest in signing Detroit Pistons big man Greg Monroe, but it appears as if the Orlando Magic may be the most likely suitors at this point. Some of their moves in the past couple days (releasing Jameer Nelson instead of trading him) have been of the cash clearing variety and Steve Kyler believes their desire to stockpile money is because they will enter the race to sign Greg Monroe.

Unlike a handful of teams that are interested in signing Greg Monroe, the Orlando Magic have plenty of cap space to do so and can offer the young frontcourt talent a max contract that he so desires. Of course, that might mean little in the grand scheme of things considering that Monroe is a restricted free agent and the Detroit Pistons have every right to match the said offer.

Will they though?

The Pistons have stated previously that they planned to match any offer Monroe receives in free agency, but this is also a team who reportedly hasn’t ruled out a possible sign-and-trade scenario involving Monroe either. Given that, it seems as if there might be a crack in the window.

Of course, it’s rather unlikely that the Pistons would allow Monroe to walk without getting some type of compensation so even if the Orlando Magic were to sign the big man, it’s still likely to cost them in assets.

That might be a price worth paying though after two consecutive sub-par seasons in the Magic Kingdom.
