As we all expected, since the NBA free agency period has opened up, Pau Gasol has generated a lot of interest from teams around the league, including the Lakers’ heavy interest in re-signing him. But, it seems as if there’s a new front runner to land his services, and it’s the Lakers’ Western Conference foe, the Oklahoma City Thunder.
While the main teams that have been talked about so far have been a return to the Lakers, as well as the Miami Heat after he recently spent some time on the phone with Pat Riley, ESPN’s Ramon Shelburne is reporting that the Thunder have suddenly decided to go as hard as they can for the forward, and because of that, are now in the lead.
In a surprising twist, OKC has come on strong with Pau Gasol, and described as a “frontrunner” for the Spaniard.

Of course, pairing up Gasol with the likes of Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook on a team that we know is oh-so-close to winning an NBA Championship could be the best marriage of all, and the Thunder may have realized that now that it appears they’ve woken up and not only thrown themselves into the race, but have run right past all of the other contenders.
It’ll be interesting to see how talks progress going forward, but this is certainly quite the intriguing plot twists we have regarding one of the most lucrative players on the market.
