Robert Griffin III was electric with the football in his hands in 2012. In 2013, not so much. But there’s good news from Redskins offseason workouts. RG3 is beginning to look like his 2012-self again. Sean McVay went on air with ESPN 980 and said that RG3 looks liberated without a knee brace.

More from NFL

“I don’t think there’s any question: he looks explosive,” McVay said, via Dan Steinberg of the Washington Post. “He looks like he is exactly what he was in the 2012 season. I think people underestimate when you have a brace on your knee how much that truly restricts you.”

It’s a good sign that McVay is impressed by his quarterback, but then again, that’s what he is paid to say. Everyone will believe it when they see it in preseason. Though we may have to wait a little while before RG3 displays his speed. As has been the case since his injury, the Washington coaching staff wants to limit RG3’s carries and take advantage of his refined passing abilities. His healed and brace-free legs should make him considerably surer footed in the pocket.

“I think that’s going to be a big part of what he does,” McVay said. “And he’s continuing to get more and more comfortable feeling some of those soft spots in the pockets, and being able to remain a passer while also understanding that hey, I do have this elite trait with my legs and athleticism, that if things do break down I can create that way also.”
