Edwin Encarnacion will be out of commission for a while. That is the news on Sunday as an MRI revealed that the Toronto Blue Jays’ slugger has a strained right quad.

According to Gregor Chisholm of MLB.com:

Chisholm also notes that the diagnosis leaves some uncertainty as far as the timetable for Encarnacion’s return, but either way he will end up on the disabled list.

There might be an instructive case in the big leagues this season over in the National League, as Joey Votto of the Cincinnati Reds has also dealt with a quad strain. Unfortunately his season does not tell a very promising story, as he has struggled in general and is reportedly headed for his second stint on the disabled list this week.

The Blue Jays will hope that Encarnacion’s injury is less severe and will take less time to heal. We won’t get to see Encarnacion and his 26 home runs in the Home Run Derby or the All Star Game. While that is not great news for the American League or the fans excited for those events, it might be good news for the Blue Jays because it buys them some a few extra days to get Encarnacion healthy.
