One of the surprising All-Star selections when the rosters for the American League and National League were revealed on Sunday night was Josh Harrison of the Pittsburgh Pirates. While his versatility is appealing and his defense outstanding, Harrison likely was not even on anybody’s radar for a spot.

Harrison’s selection is not just about his appeal as a late inning substitute, however. It would do a disservice to his season not to acknowledge his offense, as he is batting .298/.335/.453 with nine stolen bases. He earned his All-Star nod with his all-around high level of play, even if it is his defense that he is known for.
Speaking of that defense, Harrison reminded us once again just how spectacular he can be with the leather on Monday night. In his team’s game against the St. Louis Cardinals, Harrison sprinted and dove to rob Jhonny Peralta of extra bases on a low line drive that appeared to be headed for the corner.
The amount of ground he covers to get a screaming shot like this one is awfully impressive, and it shows the kind of defense that the Pirates get across their crazy-athletic outfield on a nightly basis.
