The Chicago Bulls would have liked to sign Carmelo Anthony and such a thing remains a possibility but at the end of the day it’s far from a certain thing. That’s why Chicago has been investing time in looking at backup free agent plans and that has led them down a road that ends at Pau Gasol.

More from Chicago Bulls

According to Mar Stein from ESPN.com, the Bbulls may be turning their attention and focus towards acquiring Pau Gasol from the Los Angeles Lakers in either a sign-and-trade or simply on the open market.

It’s a move that makes snese but is more risky than fans are willing to admit. While the Bulls indeed can use Gasol, it smacks of two very poor signings the Bulls made in the last four years. When the missed out on a big free agent back in 2010, they settled on giving Carlos Boozer an awful contract and they again handed out a bad deal to a an over-the-hill Rip Hamilton.

The Gasol signing — should it happen — has the potential to be both the Boozer and Hamilton signing wrapped up into one, but it could also be the magic piece of the puzzle that is missing. Either way the Bulls seem interested enough to find out and are nearing the point where getting Gasol is more of a focus than getting Melo.
