Bulls still in hunt for Carmelo Anthony, focused on Pau Gasol

The Chicago Bulls were the first team Carmelo Anthony visited when free agency opened. Anthony still hasn’t decided nearly mid-way through July, and the Bulls haven’t been told they’re out of contention for the superstar according to ESPN’s Marc Stein.

Most reports have Anthony considering re-signing with the New York Knicks, and while the Bulls aren’t necessarily out of the race they seem to be focused on Los Angeles Lakers power forward Pau Gasol.

There was a report that a deal between Gasol and the Bulls was “practically complete.

As far as Anthony goes, the rumors are far and wide ranging. There are reports that he is torn between the Bulls and Knicks, then there are reports that the Los Angeles Lakers are still contenders to sign Anthony.

The smart move on is to move on and sign players before they get signed elsewhere, but ultimately if Anthony decides on Chicago but signing Gasol makes that not possible they might have a bit  of regret.

Bulls can send Boozer and first round pick for Pau Gasol and then trade Gibson, NG players and a first to NY for Melo

Not gonna work unless you throw Noah and two first rd picks with that

You won’t find dumb managers in the NBA like in your fantasy league, dream on getting the defensive player of the year and two first rounders for a ball hog. Anyways Melo was using other teams to get the max money, otherwise he wasn’t planning on signing less than the max for 4 years, all he cares about is money and not winning

From what you sound like, I don’t believe even your parents were born the last time the Knicks won anything, it’s been that old, back when Phil was still playing the game, atleast the Bulls won 6 rings in the 90′s.

Bulls may have talent but they can’t get over the hump I dont see them winning

I think the Gasol move does not hurt them in the Carmelo hunt. NY is playing hardball on not working on a S&T the rumors have said. If that is true, then CHI sends Dunleavy + non-guaranteed deals to LAL for Gasol. They can pay Gasol about $9M and stay over the cap to have their full non-taxpayer MLE. they take on about $6M against the cap. If CHI amnesty Boozer now, they clear up about 4-5M in cap space. If they trade Gibson, Snell, and Randolph for nothing in return against the cap then they are right back where they started in cap space and can still get Melo outright in free agency. Those deals are much easier to move than Boozer’s deal.

NY can take these guys back directly and facilitate the trade to avoid being left empty-handled. This is only if Carmelo wants to come to Chicago. He is taking too much time and if Chicago does not move the non-guaranteed deals then they lose them as an asset. This deal makes a lot of sense. The benefit for Chicago in S&T of Melo is they can still get Mirotic using the MLE and add Melo. If NY does not participate Melo still gets about the same as the reported offer he got before and CHI would need to figure out what to do with Mirotic, use the Room exception to get him or something else.
