In a move that is bound to lead to lots of unwarranted rumor and speculation, the Tampa Bay Rays have scratched ace pitcher David Price from his scheduled Saturday start against the Blue Jays.

But not so fast on firing up the David Price trade rumors. Joe Maddon says Price has been scratched because he is sick (via The Tampa Tribune):

"I guess some kind of a virus has been coming on. We’re hoping that David can actually pitch on Sunday. I will know more (today)."

There’s no mystery, it’s just a virus. David Price isn’t being sat down because the Rays have a trade in place. So forget about all your speculation.

On the other hand, what if Price is being sat down because there’s a trade in place and Maddon didn’t want to tip his hand so he concocted the virus story?

Doesn’t that sound like exactly the kind of story you would make up off-the-cuff when you weren’t ready for the question?

Is it possible that Joe Maddon is just a terrible excuse-maker? Like Costanza when he tried to get out of the funeral for Peterman’s mom and the best he could do was piggy back on Elaine’s excuse?

I want to think that Joe Maddon is a better liar than Costanza, but I don’t know that for sure.

Jake Odorizzi will get the start in place of Price on Saturday.
