The Dallas Mavericks, despite signing Chandler Parsons have maintained a stance suggesting that they want to re-sign Shawn Marion. Of course, we haven’t heard much from The Matrix himself, so news about his return in Big D has been relatively quiet.

More from Dallas Mavericks

There where whispers suggesting that Shawn Marion wasn’t interested in being a backup, though those leaked well before the Mavericks signed Parsons. Still, it doesn’t sound like the forward will have a change of heart as according to Donnie Nelson, the Dallas Mavericks are not expecting Shawn Marion to return.

“Well ‘Trix is just like we’ve talked about with JET and Dirk — we don’t sip from the cup without Shawn Marion so absolutely you never close the door. Now, his value in the marketplace is much higher than what we have right now, and so I would categorize that as a long long long long long shot.”

With only $2.8 million (give or take) to offer Shawn Marion, the Dallas Mavericks don’t have the type of funds needed to sign the veteran if he’s looking to cash in. Of course, if he’s more interested in playing for a championship then he’s not going to find much better options elsewhere. It will come with a reduced role and far less pay, but it’s a sacrifice he’d need to make if he’s looking for a winning atmosphere.

Of course, he could attempt to latch on with a team who has championship aspirations and available money, but it’s doubtful many teams in that position would welcome him as their starting small forward.
