The Houston Rockets have been looking to add an additional big man after they decided to send Omer Asik to the New Orleans Pelicans. Their first and most understandable choice was Chris Bosh, though the All-Star power forward decided to return to the Miami Heat.

That left the Rockets in a bit of a bind and wanting to fortify their bench, the team decided to sign Joey Dorsey to a two-year contract on Tuesday afternoon.

If the name sounds familiar, that’s likely because it is. Dorsey, who played for FC Barcelona in Spain this past season was a talented collegiate player who played for both the Memphis Grizzlies and Sacramento Kings.

Struggling to make an impact in the league, Joey Dorsey decided to play across seas where he has spent the last few years of his basketball career, alternating between stops in Turkey, Greece and Spain.

So why the Houston Rockets? It’s a question many are asking as most would assume the team could have done a bit better in free agency than signing the 6’9, 275lb center. Of course, he’ll come cheaply (even though no terms have been announced) and will be able to fill the lane when Dwight Howard is not on the floor.

Potentially figuring that the available big men wouldn’t likely be worth their contracts, general manager Daryl Morey might have felt just getting a big body in the lane was worth the cheap deal he’d be able to secure Dorsey on.

It’s a bit of a head scratcher considering Dorsey has been out of the league since the 2010-11 season, but it’s a low risk move on the part of the Houston Rockets.
