Although Michael Vick has seemingly done what he can to squash the ongoing back and forth between he and Geno Smith for the New York Jets starting quarterback job, former NFL wide receiver Plaxico Burress has thrown his hat into the ring.

More from New York Jets

Appearing on ESPN’s NFL Live, Burress said that he knows Rex Ryan too well and knows how the situation is going to unfold.

“Michael Vick will be the starter on opening day for the New York Jets. When it comes down to evaluating the quarterback position, being a pure passer and a guy who can make plays, and when it comes down to decision-making … Michael Vick will be the starter on opening day for the New York Jets.”

Of course, the Jets recently suggested that it’s not an open competition and that Geno Smith would likely be the starting quarterback going into the season. Of course, things can quickly change if Smith struggles during training camp or suffers an injury, but for now he appears to be the lead dog for the starting gig.

It doesn’t sound as if Plaxico Burress has any inside information and appeared to be shooting the breeze with his fellow co-hosts, which is better than shooting his own body part I guess.

Burress hasn’t ever struck me as a great NFL mind, but we’ll see if his prediction proves to be accurate in the weeks and months ahead.

One thing is for sure – despite the best efforts of Smith, Vick and the Jets, the rumors swirling around who will start Week 1 don’t seem to be interested in going away.
