Many expected Monterrey to run away with the game against the team who was recently promoted to Liga MX after defeating Estudiantes Tecos in the 2013 Final de Ascenso.

It appeared that Monterrey was going to do just that after Humberto “Chupete” Suazo put Rayados on the board in just the third minute after beating Leones Negros goalie Iván Vázquez to the top right corner on a free kick.

However, Leones Negros answered back in the 22nd minute when Andrés Ríos found the back of the net.

After an entertaining back-and-forth first half, we entered the break tied up at one goal a piece.

The second half started with some added intensity which resulted in a yellow card for Leones Negros defender Marcelo Alatorre .

Minutes later, Rayados earned a penalty kick after a reckless challenge from Leones Negros defender Leandro Cufré inside of the box. Chupete lined up for the kick. but, luckily for Leones Negros, Vázquez was able to come up with a huge save to keep the scoreline even.

After keeping the pressure on the Leones Negros defense, Rayados were able to break the tie when César Delgado beat Vázquez  deep in the box to sink the shot in the bottom corner. The goal gave Monterrey a 2-1 lead and all of the momentum seemed to be in their corner.

Rayados built off of that momentum and scored another goal in the 83rd minute after Chupete was on a free run inside of the box while the Leones Negros defense searched for an offsides call. As Vázquez  closed in on Chupete, he dumped the ball off to Dorlan Pabon who was able to easily put the ball in the back of the net to go up 3-1.

The third goal was the icing on the cake for Monterrey, who went on to close out the win to kick off their Apertura campaign with a big win and three early points.
