Jets quarterback job is Geno Smith’s to lose

The New York Jets signed veteran quarterback Michael Vick, and it immediately made it seem like a quarterback controversy was brewing. How could the veteran and successful Vick not get a chance to compete against second-year player Geno Smith, who struggled in his rookie season.

Regardless of what anyone or logic would seem to dictate, it looks like Smith is walking into the camp as the starting quarterback and it is his job to lose.

From the New York Daily News:

"This year’s version of QB Royale is a two-man grudge match between Good Geno and Bad Geno. Vick, in many respects, will be an innocent bystander. It’s Smith’s job to lose. If he doesn’t screw up in July and August, the job will belong to him."

If that time comes though, whether in training camp or early in the season, a ready and willing Vick is ready to pounce.

“I still feel like I’m a premiere quarterback in this league,” said Vick. “As long as that’s what I feel in my heart, when I step on the field, I can go out and (express) that. My thing is to continue to try to improve each and every day and not feel like I’m a crafty veteran who knows it all. I’m still open to learning. I still feel like if the opportunity comes, I can help this football team win.”
