The Los Angeles Lakers have quietly put together a pretty impressive offseason, from drafting Julius Randle to trading for Jeremy Lin and a first round pick as well as acquiring Carlos Boozer on the amnesty auction block, the Lakers are doing pretty alright all thins considered.

More from Los Angeles Lakers

One thing the Lakers still need to do though is find a head coach and while the team is zeroing in on one specific candidate, there has been no formal movement on the head coaching front. Chris Broussard from ESPN.com reported on Friday that Bryon Scott had been offered a contract but like most things he throws against the wall, the report was refuted and tossed aside but everyone else reporting on the situation.

Despite that report, which only ESPN seemed to think was earth shattering news, the Los Angeles Times is reporting that no formal contract offer to Byron Scott has been made just yet but the team is closing in on making that a reality.

"The Lakers are getting closer to hiring their third head coach since Phil Jackson left their sidelines in 2011, engaging in negotiations with Byron Scott, according to a person familiar with the situation. There has not been a formal contract offer, but the Lakers consider Scott to be their preferred candidate and are hoping to reach an agreement soon."

Scott is going to be the head coach of the Lakers, which is likely why the Chris Sheridan-style report came from ESPN since it’s a foregone conclusion. But nothing is official in the NBA until a contract is signed — which hasn’t happened yet — and as of now anything can still happen in L.A.
