A free agent to be, it was expected that Kendall Hunter would see increased snaps this season with the San Francisco 49ers likely to lighten the load for starting running back Frank Gore. But that won’t be the case as Hunter has now suffered this third major injury in just three seasons which include two torn Achilles’ and an ACL.
That hasn’t stopped the 49ers from wanting to make a commitment to their running back however according to general manager Trent Baalke.
“We’d love to have Kendall,” Baalke said. “Kendall is a tremendous football player and an even better young man. What’s the likelihood? It’s not even worth speculating at this point, but Kendall knows, as does his representative, exactly how we feel about him on both sides –- as a person and as a player.”
In the small amount of field time that Hunter did receive last year, he looked very explosive and appeared to posses a lot of skills you look for in a starting running back. Given that, it’s understandable as to why the San Francisco 49ers would like him to return. Add in that he’ll likely come at a significant discount considering most teams aren’t going to break the bank on a player who has suffered such devastating injuries and it seems like a reunion between the two appears likely.
Baalke said he expects Hunter to have a full recovery.
