One team that seems to be cooling on potential blockbuster options are the St. Louis Cardinals. After acquiring starting pitching help on Wednesday afternoon, the Cardinals don’t seem to be in the market for a big trade that lands them Boston’s Jon Lester, although never say never at the trade deadline.
According to CBSSports.com’s Jon Heyman, as well as Peter Gammons from the MLB Network, the Cardinals were in on the Jon Lester talks earlier this week but they don’t seem to have too big of a need for him now that the team has acquired Justin Masterson from the Indians.
This doesn’t mean a trade won’t happen but it seriously puts into doubt the possibility of one being worked out. The bottom line here is that the Cardinals just don’t need to make a trade for Lester to fill a need at starting pitching, but with the type of injuries they’ve had in their rotation, a deal can’t be counted out until it’s past the deadline.
