The Yankees probably could use an upgrade in their outfield, and they definitely could use another bat in their lineup. There aren’t a lot of big-time bats available, but there are some halfway decent options if the Yankees want to make a deadline deal.

More from MLB

Two names you hear connected to the Yankees are the Phillies’ Marlon Byrd and the Rangers’ Alex Rios. Between those two men, Andrew Marchand believes Byrd is the more probable. But sources are telling Marchand that, realistically, neither man is likely headed to New York.

Neither Byrd nor Rios would exactly ignite an inferno of excitement under Yankees fans who are used to the team landing big-time talent at the deadline. This year, there just aren’t a lot of moves to be made. There aren’t a lot of great bats out there, and landing one of the available pitchers would require the Yankees to trade top-level prospects they just don’t have.

Yankee fans will likely have to be content with the moves that have already been made. Chase Headley and Brandon McCarthy? Is that enough to get New York over the top?

There’s also the possibility that New York could pick up Cuban Rusney Castillo, an exciting talent who could potentially step in like Yasiel Puig or Jose Abreu and have an immediate impact. Imagine if Puig suddenly showed up in New York. How amazing would that be?
