The NFL’s new emphasis on calling illegal contact penalties is resulting in a veritable deluge of yellow flags this offseason, and this is beginning to draw the ire of head coaches.

More from New York Jets

Rex Ryan in particular has spoken out against the adjustment in the way officials call illegal contact, expressing his concerns that the calls could have a negative effect on the game (via PFT):

"“Let guys play,” Ryan said. “If it’s a penalty, then call it. If it’s not, then let them [play]. Guys should be able to compete for the football and things like that down the field. The game is great as it is, but if it’s in the rules then you’ve got to play within the confinements of the rules and I have no problem with that.”"

Rex is very careful with his wording there because he doesn’t want to get fined, but he gets his point across anyway. He thinks the illegal contact emphasis is dumb and will make it harder to play defense, and that sucks for teams that like to get after it on defense.

Get used to it Rex Ryan. The NFL is trying to phase out old-school hard-nosed defensive football guys like you and pave the way for the candy-ass offensive masterminds like Chip Kelly to take over. The NFL now belongs to the pansy Chip Kellys of the world and is no place for the bad-ass Rex Ryans. And that is kind of sad.
