Although the Cleveland Cavaliers are a legitimate contender with LeBron James and Kevin Love in the fold, they need a player to protect the rim.

More from Cleveland Cavaliers

Sam Amico of Fox Sports Ohio believes Tristan Thompson can be a decent rim protector but reports the Cavaliers have their eye on a “younger guy” and a guy “who’s been around the block.”

"I can’t get any names on that Todd. As I reported last week, I do know they had an eye on a younger guy, as well as a guy “who’s been around the block” a little. But they won’t give specifics, likely because the guys are free agents and it might be bad for business to put the names out there…..That’s a good question. I think Tristan is a decent NBA rim protector, but the Cavs would like to get another one who strikes actual fear in opponents around the basket. Tristan is decent, though. His contract situation is very interesting. This will be a big year for him as far as that goes."

There is also a report the Cavaliers could wind up moving Thompson rather than trying to extend him.

Thompson averaged 11.7 points and 9.2 rebounds per game while shooting 47.7% from the field and 69.3% from the free throw line. In his career, he’s put up 10.8 points and 8.6 rebounds per game while shooting 47.3% from the field and 63.0% from the free throw line. He was originally selected by the Cavaliers with the fourth-overall selection in the 2011 NBA Draft. Thompson is still just 23 years old.

The Cavaliers  have been tied to the likes of Miami Heat free agent center Greg Oden, Phoenix Suns’ veteran free agent Emeka Okafor and Milwaukee Bucks’s free agent big man Ekpe Udoh as well as Bucks’ big man Larry Sanders.
