The Baltimore Orioles have officially placed their third basemen, Manny Machado on the 15-day disabled list on Wednesday. Machado suffered on Aug. 12 when breaking his bat and falling to his knees on a swing in the third inning against the New York Yankees.
Here’s how it happened:
Machado, 22, has been a star in the field at third base for the Orioles and has kept his batting solid with a .278 average and 12 home runs for the AL East leaders. He was an All-Star in 2013 and placed ninth in the AL MVP voting.
The Orioles have called up infielder Cory Phelps to replace Machado while he’s on the DL. Phelps was batting .258 with 49 RBI’s for the Norfolk Tides, Baltimore’s Triple-A affiliate.
Without Machado, Baltimore is stretched both offensively and defensively relying on Nick Markakis, Adam Jones and Nelson Cruz to drive in the runs.
Machado, who won a Gold Glove in 2013, is surely on pace to do it again if he can stay healthy. The young star has been flashy with the glove. Here’s just one of his many web gems this year courtesy of MLB.com.
If Machado can return healthy after his two weeks on the DL, Baltimore may have nothing to worry about, but with the Toronto Blue Jays and New York Yankees closing in on the AL East lead, they’re going to need everything they have without him.
