Just one day after he played hero with a game-winning home run, Boston Red Sox outfielder Yoenis Cespedes was forced to exit the game early with an injury.

More from Boston Red Sox

According to Ian Browne of MLB.com, Cespedes left the game Wednesday in the seventh inning on Wednesday with a right hand contusion. The team does not not expect it to be anything serious, however.

"Though Red Sox slugger Yoenis Cespedes left Wednesday’s game against the Reds in the seventh inning with a contusion of his right hand, it doesn’t sound as if the injury is anything to worry about.“In his last at-bat, he got jammed pretty good,” said Red Sox manager John Farrell. “He wanted to stay in the game, but he felt a little soreness in it and might have affected the grip of it, so [we] took it out of his hands. It was precautionary, [and we] got him out of the game.”"

What made this even more impressive from Cespedes is the fact that he still drove in a key run on the play in which he injured himself as his team went on to win 5-4.

The Red Sox face an interesting situation with Cespedes. The Cuban outfielder’s contract is such that he is not eligible for arbitration and will hit free agency in 2015. That makes the time between now and then crucial for him and the Red Sox as all parties assess their potential future together.

In the meantime, it makes plenty of sense to exercise caution with any injury, especially with the Red Sox at the bottom of the standings.
