The free spirited Ervin Santana gets into a little exchange with Dee Gordon while Gordon is on second base, daring Gordon to try and steal third on him. This happened right after Gordon stole second so you know Gordon wasn’t afraid to steal on Santana.
Jawing at the base runner from the mound is not a normal part of the cat-and-mouse that goes on between pitchers and runners. In fact, it’s probably a good way to get called for a balk.
Santana manages to avoid the balk call. He just wants Dee Gordon to know that he doesn’t fear Gordon’s speed. Even though Gordon is the best base stealer in the majors right now. Santana’s like, “Go ahead. Take your base if you want it so bad. Take ALL the bases, I don’t care.”
I wonder how a pitcher would feel if a batter started jawing at him like that from the plate. The guy would probably get knocked right on his ass by some chin music. It’s easy to be a big man when you’re the one holding the ball in your hand.
