Life can be tough for a rookie in the NFL, but Jalen Saunders had an experience that goes well beyond the normal travails of the first year player. Per the Jets Twitter account, young Mr. Saunders was involved in a single-vehicle car accident while driving himself to practice at the Jets facility Friday morning.

More from New York Jets

The Jets say that Saunders was transported to the hospital and is being monitored as a precaution, and also say he won’t travel with the team to Cincinnati Saturday and is therefore out of the game vs. the Bengals.

And that is a very crappy way to begin your day. On the bright side for Saunders, it doesn’t appear that he suffered any serious injuries.

A fourth-round pick by the Jets this year out of Oklahoma, Saunders is listed as “other” on the New York depth chart. When you’re “other” on the depth chart you don’t want to miss any practices and certainly any preseason games, so it’s bad news for Saunders that he is temporarily out of action after crashing his car.

It’s hard to raise your status above “other” if you can’t even get on the practice field or play in preseason games because you’re laid up in the hospital. The only upside? Hot nurses. I hope Jalen at least has a hot nurse taking care of him while he’s being held for precautionary reasons.

Jello too. Hospital jello is a good thing.
