Dating back to his tenure at Syracuse, New York Knicks small forward Carmelo Anthony has always been a bit ‘hefty’. He wouldn’t be described as overweight by any stretch, but there was always a few extra pounds lingering on Melo’s body.

That of course wasn’t necessarily a bad thing considering Carmelo Anthony would spent a decent amount of time at power forward when the New York Knicks went small and was often found posting up in the paint. Simply put, if you’re going to do that and do so effectively, you’re going to need some bulk.

However, with the New York Knicks now moving to a more fluid triangle offense, Carmelo Anthony will no longer need to use his strength to overpower opposing talent. In fact, it’s expected that he’ll spend a good portion of his time on the court near the perimeter which is part of the reason as to why Anthony has dedicated himself to getting leaner during the offseason.

His desire to make himself better even impressed his trainer who says Anthony has been ‘tenacious’ during his regiments.

“He’s just tenacious with his training,’’ Idan Ravin said. “He’s working out very hard, ramped it up, being even more meticulous. He’s been super diligent on his diet, extra cardio, rest. A lot of amazing people were hired [by the Knicks] and he’s excited about it. It’s another example of Melo trying to be super prepared.’’

So often you see a player cash in come free agency and coast to easy street, but it doesn’t appear as if Carmelo Anthony will be taking that route.
