Fantasy Baseball: Waiver Wire Starting Pitcher Pickups-August 21, 2014

facebooktwitterreddit

Thursday is usually an important swing day in fantasy baseball weeks, and this week the MLB only has eight games on the schedule. Even with such limited options, there are pair of starting pitchers for arch-rivals who are each worth a look if you are streaming a starter or looking for a one-game fill-in.

My starting pitching pickups have been rolling along so far in August (archive and new posts show up here). In almost 350 innings this month, my picks are a combined 27-13 with a 3.05 ERA, a 1.18 WHIP, and a 7.65 K/9 rate. Each day, my picks are available in at least half of ESPN leagues when they are selected the day before their scheduled start.

Brandon McCarthy. 1. player. 43. McCarthy has been excellend since coming to the Yankees going 4-2 with a 2.30 ERA.  In his last two starts which were his two losses, the Yankees have scored a total of zero runs wasting a pair of outings that would qualify as quality starts.  McCarthy has 23 K’s in his last three starts in 18.1 innings while walking just three.  He’s been great at Yankee Stadium, so make him your top pickup if he’s still available in your league.  He just squeaks in under the 50% threshold for probably the final time this season.. 49.9% owned. vs Houston Astros
