One has to wonder if Darrius Heyward-Bey would even still have a career in the NFL as a wide receiver if not for the fact that the Oakland Raiders inexplicably drafted him in the first round of the 2009 draft.

That pick, which was completely off the grid as compared to the draft boards for pretty much every other NFL team, was based mostly on the Raiders’ famous infatuation with speedy players. They would overvalue fast players, again and again, regardless of the other skills (or lack thereof) that those players possessed. That was what happened with Heyward-Bey.

Even with the Raiders clearly having that pick wrong, the promise of Heyward-Bey’s speed continues to earn him second chances. He was on the roster with Andrew Luck and the Indianapolis Colts last season, and now he is trying to catch on with Ben Roethlisberger and the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Whether he can overcome the results of his disappointing career thus far remains to be seen, but Heyward-Bey delivered a beautiful catch on Thursday night in his team’s preseason game against the Philadelphia Eagles. He showed the speed to get loose and then the footwork to keep his feet inbounds.
