No one would argue with the idea that Kentucky basketball coach John Calipari is an outstanding recruiter.

But some question how strong of a basketball tactician he really is. The line of thinking there is that Calipari wins to the degree he does because he has college basketball’s best players, not because he’s a great coach. Among the people that believe this is WFAN radio host Mike Francesa.

After interviewing Calipari on his show, Francesa echoed these sentiments on the air, which led to the Kentucky coach calling in under the name “John from Kentucky.”

Coach Cal initially defends himself using an altered voice to disguise himself before revealing his identity and speaking his mind to Francesa.

But instead of Francesa keeping Cal on the line and debating at length with him (which would have made great radio), the radio host hangs up on Calipari as if he were any normal radio caller.

It’s certainly bizarre and well-worth listening to.

The argument about whether Calipari is a great basketball coach or will surely never be solved, considering he’s going to recruit the best talent wherever he coaches and some will strangely hold that against him.

The fact of the matter is that Calipari is one of the more successful basketball coaches of the past decade and that’s not solely a result of the talent he has coached.
