Fantasy Football 2014: Oakland Raiders RB Rundown

The Raiders offense has not been very kind to fantasy owners in the past few years. While the offense has struggled to move the ball effectively, there are some value opportunities since they don’t get national attention and you never have to pay premium prices for players even if they are getting plenty of chances.

The big tease in the Raiders rushing attack has been Darren McFadden who has shown potential of being a top fantasy option but can’t stay healthy long enough to deliver.  This season, the Raiders aren’t counting on him as their primary back after bringing in long-time fantasy contributor Maurice Jones-Drew.

Here is my take on each of the Raiders RB’s heading into a big weekend of fantasy football drafts. The rankings included are from my top 80 RB which came out last week and which will be updated later this week.

35

Maurice Jones-Drew

RB, Oakland Raiders

MJD should get most of the carries in Oakland and especially handle the inside running which includes the majority of goal line opportunities.  MJD is an interesting flex option especially in PPR leagues, but after injury issues the last couple of seasons he’s not someone you want to count on on a week-to-week basis.  In my mind, he’s a low-end RB3 and a flex-play in the right matchups.  Jones-Drew will have to share carries which may help him stay healthy throughout the season but will also cap his ceiling.

Darren McFadden

RB, Oakland Raiders

Most owners have taken a shot on McFadden at some point in the last six years only to get burned.  This season, he’s part of the committee which is probably the ideal role for him as he gets to work more in space and leave the tough sledding to MJD.  He could be a flex play some weeks, but I don’t think he’ll get enough touches to make him a weekly consideration and there is still the obvious injury concerns as well.
55

Latavius Murray

RB, Oakland Raiders

Murray has had to battle his own injury (foot) which cost him his rookie season, but he’s healthy and should open the season as the Raiders third back.  Murray could quickly be pressed into action if injury takes down either or both of the veterans in front of him.  He’s a name to know on the waiver wire in standard leagues or to stash away if your leagues rosters are big enough to keep him.  Murray is a late-round stash possibility, but not someone who will see much work until his situation changes.
