Manchester United are willing to let Danny Welbeck go on a permanent deal this summer, according to multiple reports. The England international was a regular under Van Gaal’s predecessor, David Moyes, making 25 league appearances and scoring 9 goals last season.

However, with Louis van Gaal looking to make a mark in his debut season, Danny Welbeck has been deemed surplus to requirements by the Dutchman. With Javier Hernandez linked with a move away, the fact Welbeck has also been told he can leave may hint at a new forward arriving at Old Trafford.

Adding to this speculation is the fact that the #9 jersey has yet to be taken up, amid speculation that van Gaal could make a move for Edinson Cavani or Falcao this summer. Alternatively, van Gaal may look to promote James Wilson into the first team, after the 18 year-old has made an impressive impact on the new boss.

Danny Welbeck has been with Manchester United since 2001, being handed his debut by Sir Alex Ferguson in September 2008. So far, the striker has made 80 league appearances and has been implemented on the wing also.

A list of Premier League clubs are said to be monitoring Welbeck’s situation, including the likes of Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal, Sunderland and Hull City. Sunderland manager Gus Poyet has made his interest in Welbeck clear, while other coaches are yet to respond to the speculation.

"“He’s a player who myself and other managers are interested in. We need to wait. We haven’t made an approach.“"

After Nani left the club earlier this week to join Sporting Lisbon on loan, United may also try to budge some more players from the wage bill before the September 2nd transfer deadline. Anderson, Javier Hernandez, Anders Lindegaard and Wilfried Zaha are just four of a host of names rumoured to be leaving the club.

Louis van Gaal stayed tight-lipped on the Welbeck situation in a recent press conference.

"“I know what I said to Danny and Danny knows exactly what I said to him. That is private.“"
