The Dallas Cowboys’ future may have gotten a lot brighter today after news broke that Pro-Bowl Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson is interested in joining the Cowboys franchise once his time with the Vikings is up.

More from Dallas Cowboys

According to ESPN Dallas, Peterson spoke with Cowboys owner Jerry Jones this past June and told Jones that he is interested in becoming a Cowboys player.

Of course Jones was ecstatic to hear the news, but was cautiously optimistic about the potential of attaining Adrian Peterson.

“Well, I understand, Adrian,” Jones told Peterson during the call according to ESPN Dallas. “I’d like that, too. Well, I love your story. I love your daddy’s story. I’ve always respected what you’ve been about. I’ve always been a fan of yours.”

The phone call from Peterson apparently came while Jones was sitting down for an interview with ESPN reporter Don Van Natta Jr. While Van Natta could not hear what Peterson had said to Jones, he most definitely understood by Jones’ response.

“Well, we’ll see what we can do, if we can make that happen,” Jones told Peterson. “Hmm hmm … I’d like that, too … Well, we’re talking pig Latin here, but let’s see if we can do that … We’re talking pig Latin here, but let’s see what we can do about that. OK, Adrian, thanks.”

Although Peterson expressed his interest in playing for the Cowboys, he is currently in the fourth year of a seven-year contract with the Minnesota Vikings. Considering Peterson is also 29 years old, his days as a top tier NFL running back are likely numbered.

Another interesting facet to this story is regarding tampering. The NFL has severe punishments for tampering, but Jerry Jones does not believe that his short conversation with Peterson was tampering whatsoever, and he did not inform the Vikings as the NFL rules suggest he must do.

At this point the story is still very fresh, so there is no word whether or not the NFL will investigate if Jones was tampering by not informing the Vikings of Peterson’s conversation with Jones.
