The New York Jets looked like they had scored a dramatic, long touchdown to tie up their game late against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday. The score would have been tied at 31 and the game might have been headed to overtime if the play had counted.

That play did not count, however, because the Jets’ sidelines called a timeout just moments before the snap. The Jets went on to lose 31-24.

What was not clear at the time was who actually called the timeout for the Jets. It appeared that offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg was running towards head coach Rex Ryan and the sideline official yelling for timeout. Even if Ryan is technically the only one who can call timeout as head coach, that chaos appeared to create enough confusion that the Jets were granted a timeout that they wish they could give back.

Speaking on Monday about the situation, Mornhinweg took responsibility for the confusion and the fact that such a nice touchdown play was cancelled out. From ESPN:

"“First of all, I want to make it crystal clear everything that goes on offensively is my responsibility, period,” Mornhinweg said Monday. “I’ve got to do a better job of communicating and trusting ‘Big Geno.’ I’ve got to trust Geno to get everything fixed before the 40-second [play] clock. That’s the scenario. I was surprised the timeout was called.”Mornhinweg acknowledged that he did yell for the timeout, which is why Richardson felt compelled to say something to the official to get his attention."

Given the Jets’ struggles on offense in recent seasons, there was already a lot of pressure on Mornhinweg this season. This unfortunate incident will not exactly help his case or take that pressure off of him.
