If you notice CBS’ Phil Simms using the term ‘Washington’ far more than usual tonight, there’s a good reason for that.

According to the Associated Press (via Fox News), the former NFL quarterback turned broadcaster will avoid saying the word ‘Redskins’ during the Thursday night NFL broadcast.
Simms’ desire to not use the name ‘Redskins’ has been talked about for quite some time though he had yet to broadcast a game involving Washington since that date. However, Simms plans to make the statement Thursday night with a national audience watching.
"CBS lead analyst Phil Simms plans to try to avoid saying “Redskins” during Washington’s nationally televised game against the New York Giants. The network airs the matchup Thursday night as part of its new NFL package. Simms first told The Associated Press last month that he would call the team “Washington” during the broadcast."
Simms of course joins a growing list of those in the media (specifically NFL) who are choosing to refer to the Redskins as ‘Washington’ though becomes one of the first (and most prominent) to bring the change to television. Previously the vast majority of those boycotting the name were in written media.
As for Phil Simms’ broadcast partner Jim Nantz, he doesn’t disagree with the notion though suggested that it’s ‘not his job’ to take a stance. It’s assumed he will continue with the Washington Redskins team name.
