What do Josh Smith and Rudy Gay have in common?

More from Detroit Pistons

They both have a tremendous amount of talent, skills and bodies that lend themselves to difficult match-ups for defenders and an ear-full of yells from every NBA fan in the land.

Why do we yell? Because Gay insists on shooting mid-range jumpers and Smith insists on shooting jumpers in general.

Last season, Gay seemed to figure it out. He helped out the Sacramento Kings by taking smarter shots and getting to the rim more. Now it’s Smith’s turn. He shot a career-high 3.4 three-point attempts per game last season. According to Dave Hogg of Fox Sports, Smith says he will finally get into the post more.

While this would help sooth the NBA fans that would so enjoy Smith dominate in the post, I’ll believe it when I see it.

First of all, we don’t even know what kind of lineup Stan Van Gundy will use Smith in. He doesn’t seem inclined to start Smith, Andre Drummond and Greg Monroe in a paint-crowding starting five.

Van Gundy prefers to surround a single post player with shooters. Maybe SVG forces Smith’s hand by putting him at center in some situations.
