There are usually several high-profile matches in addition to what may be the best match in wrestling – the Royal Rumble itself. 30 men battle it out with each coming out one at a time. To be eliminated you have to be thrown out of the ring over the top rope and the winner receives a shot at the WWE World Heavyweight Championship at Wrestlemania.
The WWE held their Smackdown tapings in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on Tuesday night. During the show, the WWE made a major announcement. They told the fans in attendance (and will likely tell the rest of their fans when the show airs on Friday night) they would be returning to Philadelphia on January 25, 2015 for the Royal Rumble. The event will take place at the Wells Fargo Center, the home of the Philadelphia 76ers and Philadelphia Flyers.
They also announced that 40 men would be involved, rather than the traditional 30. This will be the second time they have upped the number to 40 with the first coming in 2011.
You can watch the Smackdown tapings for yourself Friday at 8:00 pm on SyFy. It should be entertaining because it is the 15th anniversary episode.
