The Los Angeles Dodgers still have a general manager and a manager. If they decided to make changes, is it possible that they would pursue a Joe Maddon/Andrew Friedman package deal?

Ned Colletti is still the general manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Don Mattingly is still the team’s manager.

If the team could acquire Andrew Friedman and Joe Maddon as a package deal from the Tampa Bay Rays to fill those respective roles, would anybody blame them? And is there a more terrifying thought for the rest of the league than that possibility?

Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe writes that a rumor of such a deal is starting to float in baseball circles:

"Rumors of an Andrew Friedman/Joe Maddon tandem for the Dodgers are making the rounds. It would require compensation."

Uh, yea. Significant compensation.

Friedman would be available to move at anytime due to the fact that he works without a contract. Seriously. As explained by Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times:

"Friedman, 37, works without a contract, as is Sternberg’s policy for top executives. He does not, as some write, have an ownership stake."

Maddon’s current contract runs through the 2015 season. Both men consistently express their fondness for their situation in Tampa Bay despite their lack of financial resources. They seem to be happy with the fact that they have a good working relationship with one another and have the freedom to operate as they wish thanks to good relationships with Tampa Bay’s ownership and top executives.

We can wonder on the outside about what Friedman and Maddon could do with the Dodgers’ bottomless resources at their disposal, but the fact remains that they have a good thing doing in Tampa Bay. They don’t need a gigantic payroll to succeed, so they might not care to leave.

You better believe that won’t stop the Dodgers from trying.
