Tampa Bay Rays general manager Andrew Friedman has left the organization to become the Los Angeles Dodgers’ GM.

The Tampa Bay Rays, despite an early season struggle, have routinely been one of the best teams in Major League Baseball for the past decade. Much of that was due to their strong front office and scouting department which took a major hit on Tuesday afternoon after Andrew Friedman decided to leave the organization and join the Los Angeles Dodgers’ front office.

Thankfully the Tampa Bay Rays do have a very stout front office and they will be able to replace Friedman with Matt Silverman, though there’s no denying the hit the team will take.

As for the Los Angeles Dodgers, it’s a major acquisition, especially after current general manager Ned Colletti has shown himself to be less than stellar despite a payroll that could bankroll a third world country. It’s expected that Colletti will remain with the team though in a senior advisory position. It was thought that the Los Angeles Dodgers were close to firing Colletti however his salary (and overall knowledge of the game) may have allowed him to keep his job with the organization.

It’s not currently known what type of impact the hiring of Andrew Friedman will have for Los Angeles Dodgers manager Don Mattingly, though it’s believed he will remain in his position. Speculation suggested a new head of the front office may want to bring in his own managerial staff though Mattingly’s job was said to be safe, despite being tied to Colletti in a round-about way.

In 2004, Friedman was named Director of Baseball Development for the Rays before eventually moving into the GM role in 2005 where he’s been ever since.
