Offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell admits he needs to get the ball to Marshawn Lynch more often

The defending Super Bowl Champion Seattle Seahawks are not looking like a championship team at times in 2014. They have suffered two losses in the first five games of the season. In those losses, Marshawn Lynch had a total of 16 carries in the two games. 16! For the guy that leads the NFL in carries since the beginning of the 2011 season.

There was much made of the workload that Lynch had during the 2013 season and the post-season, and perhaps the Seahawks bought into the whole 400-touch thing. Maybe a little too much. Lynch has 79 carries on the season for 367 yards and three touchdowns. He has also caught 14 passes for 127 yards and three more touchdowns. That means that Lynch is on pace for 253 carries and 45 receptions. That is well under the 301 carries and 36 receptions that he had during the 2013 regular season.

Their passing game has suffered because of the team not pounding the inside with Lynch. It is not freeing up anything on the edges for speedster Percy Harvin.

That said, the fans need to calm down. Limiting Lynch’s touches early in the season can’t be all bad. They are obviously worried about his workload, and studies have shown that working a running back that much usually causes them to break down more quickly. With the Seahawks still having a championship caliber team around Lynch, they want to keep him healthy for as long as possible.

Still, offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell is not concerned, so the fans shouldn’t be either. He said that “I have to do a better job of getting Lynch the ball.” Still, this is not the college game, folks. One or two losses does not take you out of the championship discussion. The Seahawks could likely lose seven games and still make the playoffs.

Maybe it makes sense to cut down on Lynch’s workload some.
