How roundly disliked is former Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin in the Volunteer State? Enough that a candidate for the State House invoked him in an attack ad.

Lane Kiffin, now the offensive coordinator for Alabama, is preparing to return to Knoxville, Tenn., for the first time since he bolted the Tennessee Volunteers after just one season as head coach to take the same position at USC.

It’s safe to say that many in Tennessee haven’t gotten over the sense of betrayal yet and at least one politician in the state wants to channel some of that into his campaign for a seat in the Tennessee House of Representatives.

Republican Eddie Smith is challenging Democratic incumbent Gloria Johnson in the state’s 13th House District, which represents part of Knoxville, and in a campaign mailer, he compared Johnson’s record in the state house to Kiffin.

The flyer didn’t pull many punches, with these gems:

"“It’s time to show big talkers like Lane Kiffin and Gloria Johnson that we mean business.”“Like Lane Kiffin, who made a lot of promises to Tennesseans, Gloria Johnson went to Nashville claiming she was going to reform health care and create jobs. And like Lane Kiffin, Gloria Johnson didn’t live up to her word.”"

Kiffin coached the Vols to a 7-5 record in 2009 before bolting for Southern California. It was the last winning season for Tennessee, which is 3-4 and 0-3 in the SEC in advance of this weekend’s meeting with rival Alabama.
