Just when it looked like Jake Locker was on his way back to take hold of the starting quarterback job for the Tennessee Titans, it sounds like head coach Ken Whisenhunt plans to go a different direction.
In a move that might signal the end of the Locker era and the belief that the Titans are playing for next year, rookie Zach Mettenberger will start in week 8 against the Houston Texans.
According to Jim Wyatt of The Tennessean:
"The Titans plan to start rookie quarterback Zach Mettenberger against the Texans on Sunday, according to sources familiar with the situation.Indications are Mettenberger was informed of the decision Tuesday night. He was not in the locker room after practice Wednesday, when Locker was off-limits to the media. Charlie Whitehurst, who has three starts this season, said he was not allowed to talk to reporters."
Hey, at least Charlie Whitehurst can get back to doing what he does best. He has been doing way too much “playing football” lately, you know?
After an ugly 19-17 loss to the Washington Redskins in week 7, the Titans are now 2-5. That might have motivated them to get Mettenberger in there to see what they’ve got with the sixth round pick out of LSU.
You would like to think that the Titans would want to set Mettenberger up for success as they assess him. Starting him against J.J. Watt? Maybe not the best way to do that for his first NFL start.
