Questions have arisen that South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier could be going back to coaching the University of Florida as it appears Florida coach Will Muschamp is on his way out.

With Florida head coach Will Muschamp clearly on his way out, South Carolina head coach and former Florida head coach Steve Spurrier could be a candidate if the job opens up.

“Let the speculation begin regarding Muschamp’s replacement and let it begin with Steve Spurrier,” CBS Sports writer Dennis Dodd wrote. “How cool would it be if Spur Dog ends his career as sort of a “bridge” to the next guy at Florida? Who knows, the way he’s going Spurrier might last another 10 years. He’s 69, looks 49 and all he wants to do is win.”

Steve Spurrier started his coaching career in Gainesville in 1978 as the Florida quarterbacks coach, then later returned as the Gators’ head coach from 1990-2001 where he posted a fantastic 122-27-1 record during his 12 seasons with the Gators. Steve Spurrier’s teams won seven Southeastern Conference championships, one national title and finished ranked in the nation’s top 10 nine times. He was a star coach at Florida before accepting a job in the NFL with the Washington Redskins that only lasted two years before he returned to the SEC college football atmosphere with South Carolina in 2005 and where he currently coaches.

With the speculation he may return to Florida to end his career, Steve Spurrier laughed it off.

“I tell everybody my next move is going to be to Crescent Beach, Fla.,” Spurrier said. “That’s where my next move is going to be to.”

Steve Spurrier and his family have a home in Crescent Beach, eluding to the fact that he’ll retire once he’s done with South Carolina.

Spurrier is 81-42 at South Carolina and is the all-time coaching wins leader both with the Gamecocks and Gators.

South Carolina has had a bumpy 4-3 2014 season so far with key losses to Texas A&M, Missouri and Kentucky.

Florida is also struggling with a 3-3 record and losses to Alabama, LSU and Missouri and a quarterback issue with Jeff Driskel, someone Will Muschamp insists on continuing to start.

Who knows, the 69-year-old veteran coach may be desperately needed in Florida, trying to return the Gators to glory. But Steve Spurrier is also the most stubborn man alive, so who knows if he wants to go through another coaching change. But what a magical way it would be to end a stellar career and a good chunk of time to stall before Tim Tebow inevitably become Florida’s future head coach. We’ll see how the rest of the season goes for each of the SEC East powerhouse teams.
