Marc Trestman is Completely Delusional Regarding Chicago Bears Coaching Staff

At 3-5, Marc Trestman and the Chicago Bears aren’t showing a whole lot of urgency regarding saving their 2014 season.

After a complete and utter embarrassment in week 8, the Chicago Bears held their midseason press conference early this week and, let me assure you fans, there is absolutely zero reason to be optimistic for the second half of the year. Both general manager Phil Emery and head coach Marc Trestman remained their calm, nonchalant selves and did not seem to show a whole lot of desperation when it came to addressing the team’s first eight games.

Chicago has been abysmal both on offense and defense in their recent games, and it’s difficult to decide which side is more to blame. Overall, it’s an easy answer — the coaching staff, and it starts at the top with Marc Trestman.

He was supposed to be the guy that could finally develop quarterback Jay Cutler into the player everyone thought he had the potential to be, but instead, fans get to continue to see the same old Jay — lots of phenomenal throws, but a handful of boneheaded decisions that completely ruin games.

Marc Trestman was supposed to be an offensive genius, and for a while, he was in his first year with the Bears. Both Cutler and Josh McCown had great success under Trestman, but now like most of the league is wondering, do teams have Marc Trestman figured out?

The biggest question we should be asking, the way I see it, is whether or not Marc Trestman is the right guy for Chicago at this very moment. Granted, any coach will try and fail with Cutler, but shouldn’t this offense at least be able to keep the games competitive with the types of weapons they have? With or without Cutler, the Bears’ offense is more than capable of putting points on the board. Having guys like Brandon Marshall, Alshon Jeffery, Matt Forte and Martellus Bennett gives the team zero excuses for the lack of production thus far.

So, if the talent is there, why aren’t they winning? Here is the answer: Marc Trestman is content with where his organization is at. He’s content with his coaching staff, which is the number one reason why Chicago is not winning football games. Mel Tucker has done nothing scheme-wise to improve upon last year’s disgusting defensive unit. Sure, they’ve made a few more plays here and there, but let’s be honest, they’re not that far off from the 2013 defense that allowed the most 100-yard rushers in franchise history.

“You know, we’ve got a great staff,” Trestman said in the press conference, according to ESPN. “In all three phases, we’ve got an excellent staff. [Defensive coordinator] Mel [Tucker] and I spent enough time that I’m acclimated to what we’re trying to get done defensively. [Special teams coordinator] Joe [DeCamillis] and I spend time to make sure that going in, we understand, and I understand what we’re trying to get done special teams-wise. And offensively, we’ve got a staff that separates a lot of the process during the course of the week. We’ve got guys responsible for third down, the red zone, goal line and short yardage, certainly in the passing game and running game, we all work together.”

Excuse me, Marc Trestman, do you really believe that the 2014 Chicago Bears have a great staff? If that’s what you call a great staff, you sir, are delusional.

The Chicago Bears are the laughing stock of the NFL. Forget teams like the Oakland Raiders or Jacksonville Jaguars, everybody expected both of those teams to be at the bottom of the barrel. But, the Chicago Bears, who added talent defensively and boasted the league’s 2nd-ranked offense a year ago? Give me a break. I don’t care how invested the front office, players or fans are in this coaching staff, nearly every single one of them needs to go — starting with Tucker.

Fans, do we really want to go another eight games with this type of coaching? We cannot afford it. Moreover, if you happen to be content with the staff like Marc Trestman is, you are also delusional. The Bears have not a single coach in the entire organization that has been able to step up and become a leader in their particular area — not even Trestman. The players don’t have a coach that they can turn to in these tough times that will rally the troops. That’s just not who Marc Trestman is. He’s not a guy that can grab ahold of a locker room, or at least, we haven’t seen that he’s capable of such thing just yet.

How much longer will Emery go with Trestman and his lackluster group of coaches on the sidelines? If he doesn’t want to waste the talent he has at the moment, especially offensively, he’d better get to making some moves and sending a few messages.
