One word describes Kobe Bryant’s quest for the L.A. Lakers first win of the season – determined. The Lakers are off to a 0-5 start and Kobe finds himself in a relentless pursuit to ignore time and circumstance to get a much needed win to stir up momentum for his floundering team.
In despite of scoring 39 points on Tuesday along with a close call during an attempt to chase down a ball headed out of bounds, the Lakers fell to the Phoenix Suns 112 – 106. At age 36 Kobe is well aware and acknowledges his body has wear and tear from years of competing at such a high level of intensity.
Kobe feels a sense of responsibility to play in the relentless fashion that has made him one of the best players to step on the court. However, he is in touch with reality as he states via ESPN, “Can I shoulder the load and these minutes constantly? Probably not, but every now and then it will be necessary.”
How can anyone cheer against an athlete that is completely aware of his mortality, but yet chooses freely to give everything he has left in order to stay competitive and relevant in the sport?
“As far as [Bryant] carrying the load, he’s going to do whatever he thinks he has to do to for us to win a game. I think the other guys, they know they have to step up,” coach Byron Scott says crediting Bryant’s efforts.
Basketball is a team sport. Without any support from his teammates, Kobe will continue to play relentless unselfish basketball. Whether you love him or hate him, you have to give him credit where credit is due.
