When DeMarcus Cousins was drafted by the Sacramento Kings 2010, fellow Alabama native Charles Barkley was thrilled to see the big man entering the NBA. Since then though Barkley has been extra tough on Cousins who has emerged as one of the best young players in the league.
A potential franchise big man, Cousins looks to be on his way to his first All-Star team selection but the war of words between the two continues as the former Kentucky star says he doesn’t respect Charles Barkley.
“I have no respect for you and I never will. We have nothing to talk about. So, yes, every time we see each other, there will never be words.”
That wasn’t a cold shoulder – that was a completely frozen shoulder, though it’s hard to begrudge the Sacramento Kings big man who has constantly dealt with continued flack from Barkley and others. Still, given Charles Barkley’s iconic status in the league and the fact that Cousins looked up to him as a youth, the frosty relationship has to weigh on each man.
Barkley meanwhile doesn’t understand why DeMarcus Cousins feels the way he does.
“I made a very conscious effort not to be too hard on him,” Barkley said. “I said he had a chance to be really good; I just told the reporters afterward that I was a little disappointed. Since then, I’ve also said he could be the best big man in the game if he’d just grow up.”
There appears to be something more to the icy relationship and it doesn’t seem like it will be thawing anytime in the future.
For now Barkley will continue to make NBA fans laugh with his knucklehead commentary will Cousins will help the Sacramento Kings to their best start in years.
